Potomac Gorge and Bear Island

The Potomac Gorge lies on the Fall Line of the Potomac River. The Fall
Line is where the Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain and was named the
fall line because this is the beginning of the falls and rapids that lie
upstream, while the flat, sandy coastal plain lies downstream. Bear Island
lies between the Potomac River and the C&O canal. This is a scenic area
with many state threatened and endangered species. There is an
entrance fee. See the
Nature Conservancy website for info.
