HIKES AND NATURAL PLACES IN THE METRO AREA
METROPOLITAN NATURALIST
Patuxent Wildlife Research Center

This area is one of our favorites for day hikes. It is close to home and
has paved roads for walking as well as trails. The area is flat, with easy
hikes and decent bird and wildlife watching. Check in at the Nature
Center at the North area and get a preview of the refuge's wildlife. See
the
refuge website for directions, maps and information.

Patapsco Valley State Park

In this almost 14,000 acre park there is hiking ranging from paved trails,
to unmaintained with some difficult hills and rough terrain. We usually
start our hike at the Orange Grove area, more out of convenience than
for special attractions as this park has many beautiful areas with gobs of
birds and other wildlife. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources
has a
website with lots of information.
