Ironwood, Muscle Tree, or American Hornbeam (Carpinus
Called Ironwood because of the very hard wood which was sometimes
used for handles of axes and other tools. Also known as Muscle Tree
because of the sculpted appearance of the smooth grey trunk.
Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)
Grows mostly in wet areas, but is also planted as an ornamental or
shade tree. Often planted on roadsides. The peeling bark is
distinctive, grey-brown layers peel away exposing a white bark.
