|BIRDS OF THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON METRO AREA
The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Texas, Arkansas, Florida,
Tennessee, and Mississippi.
The Northern Mockingbird is a year round resident. Although they are not very colorful, they are very
noticeable because of their habit of sitting in plain view on tree tops, telephone lines, rooftops while singing
loudly. They are sometimes heard singing all night long in the summer. They are very territorial and will chase
crows, hawks, and cats from the area near their nests.
The characteristic white wing patch can be seen on the outstretched wing.
