Laughing Gull (Larus atricilla)

The Laughing Gull is easily recognized in its summer plumage. This is the only gull normally found in
our area with a black head and long red bill, though some other species of black-headed gulls have
been seen here after wandering from their usual range. In the winter both the black head and red
bill are lost.

Laughing Gulls prefer salt water and are usually seen close to the coast. They are also sometimes
seen inland near trash dumpsters and garbage dumps.
