SOME BIRDS OF THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON METRO AREA
|
Great Horned Owl
These fledgling Great Horned Owls were in my old backyard in Owings Mills, Maryland.
These owls, like all the owls in our area are nocturnal, coming out only at night to hunt
their prey of small mammals and reptiles. They are more likely to be heard than seen as
they call during the night to declare their territory or to talk to their mate.
The Great Horned Owl is the largest owl found in the Mid-atlantic states.
Other owls you might see or hear in the Baltimore-Washington Area include:
Common Screech Owl
Barred Owl
Barn Owl
Saw-whet Owl
Long-eared Owl
Short-eared Owl
These are not shown here.
