BIRDS OF THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON METRO AREA
METROPOLITAN NATURALIST
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos)

The American Crow is a year round resident in the mid-Atlantic states. Crows are very social birds,
often traveling in flocks and roosting in large numbers. Crows are scavengers and are seen, along
with the Turkey Vulture, eating road kill. They also get into trash cans and can make quite a mess
on trash pick up day.

Crows are often seen chasing and harassing birds of prey, hawks and owls - a behavior called
"mobbing". A flock of crows will chase the bird of prey while cawing loudly and swooping at the often
much larger intruder until he has been chased from their territory.
